My work is predominantly figure-based, and my interest in the figure has most often been its uncanny ability to open up the door to narrative. I enjoy the short story that is told through the rendering of the hands, the face, the selective inking of a plate to highlight certain aspects of a scene. For this reason, when I set out to experiment with the abstract, I start each piece with a narrative seed.

Each of the monotypes in this series have been created with a novel, poem, or short story in mind. Often that piece of writing will end up as the title of the print itself. However, these pieces are not meant to illustrate a story, rather, with each print, I explore how the abstract composition is or is not able to sew the seed of an idea in the mind of the observer.

Just as a figurative work is initially very generous to the viewer (one generally knows what one is meant to see), so abstract pieces have the potential to be very generious - if not initially, then over time - allowing someone to see one thing one day and something different the next. This is what I expect from a successful piece in this series.
